Highway Traffic Police primary objective is to improve the flow of traffic considering the safety of citizens. One of the most important task for Traffic cops is to maintain smooth flow of traffic and provide emergency help to everyone while on drive.
In 1948 State Traffic branch (S.T.B) was formed in 1948. STB was empowered to carry out cases under the M.V. Act and B.P.Act. It was disbanded in March 1989 due to various complaints. Staff was brought under the SPs of the districts. In 1992 – Highway Safety Patrol Scheme started due to increase in dacoities and robberies on the Highways,earlier Staff brought under the control of DIG (HSP). In September 1996 – “Highway Police” came into existence – A change in nomenclature on 04.08.2009 – Limited legal powers to HP under the M.V.Act on the N.H.4 (Mumbai – Pune Highway) and the Expressway, renewable yearly.
On 23rd Jan 1992 Highway Safety Patrol was created and On 18/09/2001 IGP, Traffic was declared as “Head of Department”. Right now Highway Police Maharashtra State department is working under direct control and supervision of “Additional Director General of Police (Traffic)”.
As on today there are total 63 Traffic Aid Post running in Maharashtra State which regulate, monitor and control traffic on the highways. Which is divided In Thane, Pune and Nagpur region. The head of each region “Superintendent of Police”.
